The airfield site today.

Building commenced at Winkleigh in 1940 and was intended as a Coastal Command airfield.However the airfield was not completed until the end of 1942 and eventually opened as a Fighter command station on Jan 1st 1943,but saw little use and put on Care and Maintenance in June 1943.
Used by the USAAF 9th AF from Oct 1943 to Feb 1944 , thereafter by RAF until closure in 1945. Site sold in December 1958 .
